The gun itself is obviously the most important tool in airsoft. It can make or break your performance and enjoyment. If you are serious about airsoft then make sure that you get a good gun. Lower priced guns can be fun for a while but most likely they will not last for more than a couple of months and before you know it you will have to buy a new gun if you want to keep playing. Having a quality gun will also make you more competitive. A low quality gun which frequently jams and does not shoot straight is not much fun in the heat of battle. You will spend more time messing with the gun than actually accomplishing your objectives. It is much better to have a mid to top tier gun and spend your time accomplishing your teams objectives and dominating your opponents. To top if off, a top of the line airsoft gun is much better for showing off to your friends than a cheap plastic one.

Since the gun is an important part of the game it is good to know about the different types of airsoft guns. There are three main categories of airsoft guns: spring, electric, and gas.

Spring guns are often the least expensive, and in some cases the most reliable. A quality spring airsoft gun will practically last forever if you don't abuse it. This is because there are few moving parts within the gun and there is not much which can go wrong. The drawback of spring guns is that they need to be manually cocked before each shot is fired. This makes them good starter guns, but if playing against someone with an automatic AEG then you will have a big disadvantage because they will be able to pump out bbs 100 times faster than you. In serious airsoft battles the only time you really see spring guns used is for sniping. Snipers do not rely on a high rate of fire but instead use tactics, cover, concealment, and marksmanship to take down their prey.

Gas powered airsoft guns use either green gas or CO2 as propulsion. In other words, the gas is already pressurized. This makes them easy to use and very realistic. They can fire in semi auto mode, and sometimes even in full auto. The drawback is that once you're out of gas then the gun is basically useless until you buy more. CO2 is easy to find but Green Gas usually has to purchased online or at a specialty store. There are special adapters which allow propane to be used instead of Green Gas.

The third type of airsoft gun is electric. For rifles this is the most popular type of gun. They are battery powered. The battery turns an electric motor which in turn powers a pistol which compresses air, which is used to propel the Bbs. This makes them very powerful because they can shoot in full auto mode for as long as the trigger is pulled back. Many AEGs also come with a high capacity magazine which can hold 300 rounds or more. The batteries are almost always rechargeable so once they are out all you have to do is put them on a charger for a few hours and then you're ready to play again. In matches and events which last for a day or more it is a good idea to have a spare battery or two to use while the other is charging.

From manually operated spring loaded pistols to fully automatic electric rifles, the variety of guns available to airsoft players today is vast. Airsoft players have more options than ever when choosing what types of guns to add to their collections. Airsoft guns fall into one of three main categories based on how they are powered:

Spring Loaded Airsoft Guns
Spring loaded airsoft guns fire single shots using the potential energy stored in a spring, which is compressed when the gun is cocked and then released when you shoot. Cocking a spring loaded airsoft gun compresses the spring in preparation for the next shot, so spring loaded guns must be cocked before each shot.

In general, spring loaded airsoft guns cost less than their electric or gas powered counterparts, making them popular starter guns for newcomers to the sport. Most experienced players prefer electric or gas airsoft guns for their power and realistic feel.

Electric Airsoft Guns
Electric airsoft guns, also called airsoft AEGs (automatic electric guns) because of their automatic or semi-automatic capabilities, utilize an electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery to cycle an internal piston or spring that fires the pellets. Because of their power, performance and realism, AEGs are the most common type of airsoft guns you will see used in the sport of airsoft and are also the most widely available.

Gas Airsoft Guns
Gas airsoft guns are powered by pressurized gas – in the form of either green gas or CO2 - that is used to propel pellets from the chamber. Unlike spring loaded guns, gas airsoft guns do not have to be manually cocked before each shot. Gas powered airsoft guns are renowned for their power and precision. They are further classified as either non-blowback or blowback airsoft guns.

A blowback airsoft gun will have a slide that kicks back each time a shot is fired, mimicking the feel of firing a real gun. Non-blowback airsoft guns, on the other hand, have fixed slides and revolvers, and do not kick back as blowback guns do. Non-blowback airsoft guns give airsofters an economical alternative to blowback gas guns, but because of their realism blowback airsoft guns remain the most popular type of gas gun.

Deciding which type of airsoft gun you prefer may just take some trial and error. Many airsoft players have different types of guns to use for different purposes.

Looking for the best airsoft pistols for you? Before you go out and purchase one, you may want to know further details about the different types of pistols in order to avoid buying one which does not suit your needs.

Spring pistols: There are a huge variety of best airsoft pistols from the spring range for you to choose from. They can cost as cheap as few dollars to few hundred dollars for high end ones. These pistols have better performance than other models when used in cold weather and most of the high ends ones are very powerful with high accuracy rate. Suitable for target shooting competitions, they have a disadvantage which is they are single shot only.

Electric pistols: Your best airsoft pistols may come from this range since they are by far the most popular ones due to the fact that they are capable of firing semi automatic and fully automatic. This causes the pistols to feel realistic and fun to use. They are also available in a huge variety and have different performance ranges. Metals are used as materials to manufacture high end electric pistols and these pistols use metal gears for high velocity and rapid fire rates. The plastic models which are on the lower end do not have as powerful performance but still as fun. Just remember to have spare batteries on hand just in case the batteries died on you.

Gas pistols: Freon, Green Gas or compressed carbon dioxide is used as a propellant and is held in the pistol’s tank or reservoir. They have a blowback feature which makes them feel realistic like a real pistol. However, they are pricier because they contain more moving parts and they use gas as propellant. Most of the time, this can be the best airsoft pistols for people who collects airsoft guns.

You will spend more time messing with the gun than actually accomplishing your objectives

There are three main categories of airsoft guns: spring, electric, and gas.

Spring guns are often the least expensive, and in some cases the most reliable. A quality spring airsof gun will practically last forever if you don't abuse it.

Gas powered gun use either green gas or CO2 as propulsion.

In matches and events which last for a day or more an is a good idea to have a spare battery or two to use while the other is charging.

An air gun is a pneumatic gun which shoots projectiles by using compressed air or other high pressure gas as a propellant.

Modern air guns are usually low-powered because of safety reasons and legal limitations. They can drive a pellet beyond 330 m/s, approx. the speed of sound. Most low-powered air guns can be securely fired in a garden also. In some countries, it is illegal to use them in residential areas. Air guns can be highly accurate and are used in the Olympic Games.

There are different ways of supplying power to an air gun. They can be classified into 3 groups: spring-piston, pneumatic, and CO2.

Spring-piston: Spring-piston air guns can attain muzzle velocities close to the speed of sound from a single stroke of a cocking lever. The cocking stroke is related to the power of the gun with higher velocities require larger cocking effort.

Spring-piston guns are operated by a spring loaded piston within a compression chamber. Cocking the gun compresses the spring until a small hook engages the sear. When the trigger is pulled, the sear is released which decompresses the spring and the piston is pushed forward, compressing the air. When the air pressure increases enough to overcome friction, the pellet moves forward.

Spring guns have disadvantage of large recoil and spring vibrations. The vibrations can be controlled by adding spring guides or by tuning by air gun smiths.

Pneumatic: Pneumatic air guns make a use of pre-compressed air as the energy source. Single-stroke and multi-stroke guns use a pump for pressurizing air. These reservoirs are filled by using a high pressure hand pump (reaching pressures of 300 bar) or by transferring air from a diving cylinder. Hence, there is no major movement of heavy parts and recoil is only 'true recoil'.

Multi-Stroke pneumatic air guns require 2 to 10 pumps to store compressed air. Through this, variable power is possible and the user can change the power for different shooting ranges. The higher quality rifles can shoot to speeds above 1000 fps.

In single stroke guns, one motion of the cocking lever is sufficient to compress the air. The single pump system is usually used in target rifles and pistols, where the higher energy of a multi-stroke is not needed.

Pre-charged Pneumatic: Pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) air guns can be used for competition and hunting. Because of the cylinders or charging systems, PCP guns have larger initial cost but very low operating costs when compared to CO2 guns.

CO2: Most CO2 guns use a disposable cylinder, pre-filled with 12 grams liquefied CO2 and some expensive models use larger refillable CO2 reservoirs.

These guns have 2 key advantages over pre-charged guns: (1.) a small volume of liquid converts to a large volume of pressurized gas. (2.) No pressure regulator.
